The Do Dham Yatra is a meaningful spiritual journey to two of Uttarakhand’s most important pilgrimage destinations: Kedarnath and Badrinath. Surrounded by the magnificent Garhwal Himalayas, these sacred temples attract devotees seeking blessings, peace and a memorable religious experience.
Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Badrinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is an important destination in Hindu pilgrimage traditions. Visiting both temples in one journey allows devotees to experience two distinct spiritual destinations without undertaking the full Char Dham circuit.
Starting and ending in Haridwar, the Do Dham Yatra can be planned with road transportation, accommodation and enough time for the Kedarnath trek. The trek, weather conditions and overnight stays should be considered carefully while choosing a package.
Why start from Haridwar
Haridwar, where the Ganga leaves the mountains for the plains, is the traditional gateway. Many pilgrims take a dip at Har Ki Pauri before setting out, which gives the yatra a symbolic beginning. It also has a railway station and good road links to Delhi, so it is the practical choice.
The route: west to east
The yatra follows the traditional order, Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath, and the road runs through some of the most dramatic mountain country in the state.
Yamunotri is the source of the Yamuna. From Janki Chatti the trek is about 5 to 6 km, and ponies and palanquins are available. At the top, pilgrims boil rice and potatoes in the Surya Kund hot spring and offer it as prasad.
Gangotri, on the Bhagirathi, is where the Ganga is said to have descended to earth. The road passes through Harsil, a village of apple orchards, and the drive is as memorable as the temple.
Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, set beneath snow peaks. The trek from Gaurikund is roughly 16 to 18 km. Helicopters operate from Phata, Sirsi and Guptkashi for those who cannot walk.
Badrinath, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, lies beside the Alaknanda. The nearby village of Mana, the last Indian village before the Tibet border, makes a good evening visit.
Best time to visit Kedarnath and Badrinath
The main pilgrimage season usually runs from spring to autumn, depending on the temples’ annual opening and closing dates. May–June is a popular period, while September–October may appeal to travellers seeking a different seasonal atmosphere. Weather and road conditions can affect the schedule.
Tips for a smooth yatra
- Complete registration before you leave.
- Start the Kedarnath trek early in the morning.
- Carry cash, since ATMs and network can be unreliable in the hills.
- Keep a spare day if possible. Weather and road closures happen often.
Who should book this trip?
The Do Dham Yatra is suitable for families, couples, senior pilgrims who are medically fit for the journey, and devotees with limited holiday time who want to visit both sacred temples.
Plan your Do Dham Yatra from Haridwar with suitable travel arrangements, comfortable overnight stops and time for peaceful darshan.
